7.5 THE POEM “SHEZHIRE” AS A SOURCE OF HISTORICAL MEMORY IN BERDAKH’S LITERARY HERITAGE
Abstract
This article examines the historical, cultural, and ideological foundations of the poem “Shezhire” (“Genealogy”) in the literary heritage of Berdakh, one of the founders of Karakalpak classical literature. The study focuses on the role of the poem as a historical-literary source reflecting the socio-political processes in the South-Eastern Aral Sea region during the XVIII–XIX centuries. Special attention is given to the representation of tribal structure, ethnic identity, and the formation of national consciousness among the Karakalpak people. The poem “Shezhire” is analyzed not only as a genealogical narrative but also as a poetic chronicle preserving collective historical memory. Berdakh integrates elements of oral folklore traditions with written literary forms, transforming genealogical material into an artistic expression of national self-awareness. The research highlights how the historical experiences of the Karakalpak people—including migration, social fragmentation, and political dependency—shaped the thematic and ideological structure of the poem. The findings demonstrate that “Shezhire” plays a crucial role in the formation of historical identity and cultural continuity in Karakalpak literature. The poem serves as both a literary monument and a historical document reflecting the intellectual and spiritual development of the nation.
